Dia 21

Com 1400 km para ir do Alto do Paraíso de Goiás a São Paulo, decidimos estender a viagem por um dia, pois a idéia percorrer toda essa distência em um dia era assustadora. Como resultado da decisão decidimos passar por Brasília, pois muitos dos membros do grupo nunca haviam visitado a capital. Além disso, Rubens, um engenheiro florestal e membro do conselho do IPBio que não havia participado da viagem por motivos de saúde, morava em Brasília, o que nos permitiria passar para dizer olá. Na estrada, paramos para pegar um empadão goiana, uma massa fina de massa cozida em gordura de porco com várias carnes e milho. Entramos no Distrito Federal de Brasília, que também é tecnicamente um estado, tornando Brasília o 8º estado. Nós encontramos Rubens em um iate clube, no qual ele é membro, para almoçar e colocar a conversa em dia.

Depois fomos para o centro de Brasília para visitar a Catedral Metropolitana de Brasília. O impressionante teto de vidro verde, azul e branco era realmente de tirar o fôlego. Anjos pendurados no teto. As paredes curvas de mármore criavam um efeito acústico interessante, no qual, se alguém sussurasse em direção à parede, o som viajava por toda a sala. Imran testando essa teoria com Henrique sussurrou: "Você pode me emprestar 20 reais". Henrique confirmou sua capacidade de ouvir, mas rejeitou o pedido.

Continuamos pela avenida onde vários ministérios tinham seus escritórios. No final, havia duas torres com uma grande bandeira do Brasil no centro de um parque. De um lado da torre havia um prédio em forma de xícara voltado para cima e do outro lado um prédio em forma de xícara voltado para baixo. Um dos edifícios abrigava o Senado e o outro, o Congresso. Atravessamos a impressionante ponte JK e voltamos ao estado de Goiás. Ainda tínhamos uma longa viagem pela frente para Uberlândia, onde dormiríamos. Chegamos ao 9º e último estado : Minas Gerais e chegamos a Uberlândia tarde da noite. Antes de irmos dormir, todos demos um grande beijo em Valéria e Salvador, pois o resto do grupo sairia cedo na manhã seguinte enquanto eles queriam acordar mais tarde e voltar calmamente, então nos despedimos.

Day 21

With 1400km to go from Alto do Paraiso do Goiás to São Paulo, we had decided to extend the trip by a day as the idea of doing all that driving in one day was daunting. As a result of the decision to take a calmer route, we decided to pass by Brasilia as many of the group members had never visited the capital. In addition, Rubens, a forest engineer and IPBio board member who had not made it on the trip for health reasons, lived in Brasilia which would allow us to pop in to say hello. On the road we stopped to pick up a “empadão goiana” which is a thin crust pastry cooked in pork fat with various meats and corn. We entered into the Federal District of Brasilia which is technically also a state, making Brasilia our 8^th state. We met Rubens at a yacht club, where he is a member, to have lunch and catch up.

After we head into the centre of Brasilia to visit the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia. The stunning green, blue and white stain glass roof was truly breathe-taking. Angels hung from the ceiling. The curved marble walls created an interesting acoustic phenomena whereby if one whispered toward the wall it would travel all across the room. Imran testing this theory with Henrique whispered “Can you lend me 20 reais”. Henrique confirmed his ability to hear but rejected the request.

We continued down the avenue where various ministries had their offices. At the end were two towers with a large flag of Brazil in the centre of a park. On one side of the tower was a cup shaped building facing up and the other side a cup shaped building facing down. One of the building housed the senate and the other housed congress. We crossed the impressive JK bridge and headed back into the state of Goiás. We still had a long drive ahead of us to Uberlandia where we would sleep for the night. We hit our 9^th and final state of Minas Gerais and arrived at Uberlandia late at night. Before we went to sleep, we all gave Valeria and Salvador a big bug and kiss as the rest of the group would rush off early the next morning while they wanted to wake up later and head back calmly so we said our goodbyes.
