Dia 18

No dia seguinte, acordamos tarde e fomos visitar a parte superior da reserva. Quando saímos das estradas pavimentadas do Rio da Conceição, começamos a dirigir por belas estradas de barro no meio do cerrado. Logo uma vista deslumbrante da Chapada surgiu e o carro de Sérgio parou. Ninguém podia acreditar que o Sérgio tinha achado um lote de terra tão lindo. A diferença de vegetação em relação a seção de baixo foi chocante, pois parecia que tínhamos acabado de viajar centenas de quilômetros para um local completamente diferente quando, na verdade, tudo estava incluído na reserva de 60 hectares. Pegamos os carros para passear pela reserva. Sérgio nos mostrou onde ele planejava criar o safari. Vimos várias plantas ornamentais, pegadas de animais e insetos lindos com cores azuis e vermelhas metálicas. Enquanto olhava para um desses insetos, Val viu um sapo que realmente nos deixou de queixo caído. O sapo preto tinha pontos amarelos no corpo e manchas alaranjadas nas pernas e os guias locais nos pediram para recuar, pois acreditavam que era venenoso. O chão estava arenoso até então, mas começamos a entrar numa área onde o chão era rochoso e Sérgio explicou que o alojamento e sede do instituto de pesquisa seria construída sobre esse tipo de solo. Finalmente chegamos ao local de escolhido para a construção, que tinha uma vista maravilhosa da chapada, e discutimos a arquitetura da casa. As varandas e espaços de convivência serão direcionados para a vista e os quartos ficarão no fundo com vista para a vegetação do cerrado criando uma sensação de privacidade. Henrique subiu o drone para tirar fotos da área de construção para fins práticos, mas logo depois também tiramos algumas fotos do Duster correndo pela reserva e vídeos da paisagem deslumbrante.

Henrique ficou na reserva com o Lindomar e o Márcio, um dos outros contatos de Sérgio na região, para fotografar o percurso difícil pelo mato. Eles também pretendiam fazer uma visita noturna para ver se tinha alguma espécie bioluminescente na nova reserva.

O resto do grupo foi para o Lago da Serra, onde nadamos em um lago azul com uma vista impressionante da chapada ao nosso redor e abrimos algumas garrafas de vinho. Peixes pequenos mordiam a pele das pessoas, então tiramos o equipamento de snorkel e aproveitamos a água transparente. Passamos a tarde nadando e esperamos o sol se pôr, deixando apenas uma silhueta das formações montanhosas ao longe. Depois fomos jantar na cidade e começamos a receber notícias de que o Henrique havia encontrado um grande cupinzeiro lotado de larvas bioluminescentes. As fotos que ele tirou foram simplesmente incríveis. Infelizmente, não foram achados cogumelos bioluminescentes, mas micélio brilhante nas folhas foi encontrado mostrando potencial. Henrique também havia fotografado as diversas cachoeiras da trilha, uma tarântula, um escorpião e até se levantou às 4 da manhã no dia seguinte para tirar melhores fotos da araponga do nordeste.

Day 18

The next day we woke up late and then headed to visit the top section of the reserve. As we got off the cement roads in Rio da Conceição we started to drive on beautiful red-soil roads in the middle of low bush. Soon a stunning view of the Chapada emerged and Sérgio´s car stopped. No one could believe what an incredible plot of land Sérgio had acquired. The difference in vegetation from yesterday was shocking as it felt like we had just travel hundreds of kilometres to a completely different location when in fact it was all encompassed in the 60 hectare reserve. We got out the cars to walk around the reserve as Sérgio showed us where he planned to create the safari. We saw various stunning plants, animal footprints and gorgeous insects with metallic blue and red colours. While looking at one of these insects, Val spotted a frog which was truly jaw-dropping. The black frog had yellow spots and orange patches by its legs and the local guides asked us to stand back as they believed it was venomous. The ground had been sandy until then but we started to move to an area where the floor was rocky and Sérgio explained the housing would be constructed on this type on land. We finally got to the construction site which had a marvellous view of the chapada and we discussed how the housing would look with verandas and living spaces directed to the view and the room at the back for privacy in the cerrado vegetation. Henrique lifted the drone to get photos of the construction area for practical purposes but soon after we also took some shots of the Renault duster driving through the reserve and video of the stunning landscape.

Henrique stayed on the reserve with Marcio, one of Sérgio´s other contacts in the region, and Lindomar to do the difficult hike up the reserve as well as stay there until nightfall to do a nocturnal search.

The rest of the group went to Lake Serra where we swam in a blue lake with a impressive view of the chapada around us and opened a couple of bottles of wine. Small fish would bite peoples skin so we took out the snorkelling gear and took advantage of the transparent water. We spent the afternoon swimming and waited for the sun to set leaving only a silhouette of the mountain formations in the distance. We then went for dinner in town and started to receive news from Henrique that he had found a large termite nest which was full of bioluminescent larva. The photos he took were simply incredible. Unfortunately no bioluminescent mushrooms were found but glowing mycelium on leaves had been found showing potential. Henrique had also photographed the various waterfalls on the hike, a tarantula, a scorpion and had even got up at 4am the next day to get better photographs of the bearded belllbird.
